The Union of Students in Ireland (USI) has updated its website to help third-level students connect with spare rooms across the country.

Homeowners using the new facility will be able to avail of the “rent-a-room relief” scheme, allowing them to earn up to €12,000 tax free.

USI president Kevin Donoghue said the site will act as a noticeboard providing affordable accommodation to students and easing the stress on the rental market, while also helping "families who are struggling to make ends meet".

Mr Donoghue has said that, although the new facility will help students, the under-provision of accommodation in major towns is still a pressing issue which must be addressed by the Government.

“Long term, the solution is more purpose-built student accommodation,” Mr Donoghue said.

“While this will help alleviate the problem in the short term, it can’t be seen as a permanent fix.”
