The DIT now has its own degree-awarding status and a number of diploma courses have been upgraded. Included are design environmental and spatial; design - visual communication and fine art; optometry; business information systems development; tourism marketing and social care. The DIT has introduced a new degree in retail and services management.

RTC Limerick, UCD and in NUI Maynooth (formerly St Patrick's College): degree courses in computer science. UCG: computing studies/ mathematical science and electronic and computing engineering (advertised late in 1997). Waterford Institute of Technology: certificate courses in computer applications, and media applications development (introduced late in '97). Athlone RTC: diploma in computing.

Mater Dei Institute of Education: religion, education and English, religion, education and history, religion education and music. DCU: music performance at the Royal Irish Academy of Music. DIT: certificate/diploma in music foundation.
Accounting/finance/forestry management:
RTC Athlone: certificate in accounting technician. UCG: biomedical science, financial mathematics and economics. RTC Galway: diploma in forestry management.
Furniture/Design:
RTC Galway Letterfrack campus: certificates in furniture design and manufacture and furniture production. RTC Sligo: diploma course in design (architecture and interior design).
Languages:
RTC Tallaght: certificates in applied languages, applied language for communication and administration and languages with heritage studies. (These three were late additions in 1997).
