Dear Staffroom,

In your article in E&L (December 12th) you say referring to classroom humour - that some day a thesis will be written about the social background that illicits such replies I sincerely hope you will not undertake it if you don't know the difference between "illicit" and "elicit".

I am saddened by the very low standard of English in newspapers and the classroom. I remain, like you.
