Mountain skills course for hill-walkers

Hill-walking is growing in popularity as a hobby and while enjoyment of the hills is paramount, so too is safety. The National Mountain and Whitewater Centre (Tiglin) in the Devil's Glen Forest, Ashford, Co Wicklow, runs ongoing courses in mountain skills for those who would like to learn how to take care of themselves while out walking. The next two courses take place on November 10th and 11th (heavily booked) and on December 8th and 9th (more places available). The cost (including accommodation) is £150.

The course emphasis will be on developing the skills and knowledge required for safe walking without having to rely on others. The course will covers a wide range of topics including map reading, distance measurement, feature recognition and mountain hazards.
