The best of any bright or sunny periods will be in the east and south, where it will be dry apart from a few isolated light showers. In contrast, counties of the north-west, west and south-west will be predominantly cloudy with a little rain or drizzle occasionally, especially near the coast and on high ground.

Moderate, locally fresh north or north-west winds will keep temperatures close to or slightly below normal, generally in the low teens. The nights will be rather cold, with perhaps a slight frost in some sheltered areas. Winds backing to the south-west by Tuesday and strengthening as rain approaches from the Atlantic.

The week ahead for holiday destinations. Eastern Mediterranean (Greece and islands; west and south coast of Turkey; Cyprus): Risk of thundery showers occasionally, but mainly dry with a good deal of sunshine overall. Warm with temperatures in the low to mid-20s.

Western Mediterranean (Italy and Med coasts of France and Spain): Changeable at first with spells of thundery rain. Becoming dry and settled with good sunshine. Temperatures in the high teen or low 20s.

Atlantic coasts of France, Spain and Portugal: A few showers, but otherwise dry, though rather cool. More changeable later in the period, with cloud and rain at times and rather breezy also.

Canaries: Mainly dry and settled throughout with a lot of sunshine most days. Warm, too, with temperatures well into the 20s.
