A jumbo jet flying from the Caribbean to Amsterdam was diverted to Ireland today after crew feared a fire had broken out in the luggage hold.
The KLM Boeing 747 400 was about 200 miles off the west coast when crew became aware of an apparent fire in the luggage hold. The plane, carrying 432 passengers and 24 members of crew, was on a return flight to Amsterdam from the West Indies.
The jumbo landed safely at Cork airport around 10am and there were noreports of any injuries, said Siobhan Moore, a spokeswoman for Aer Rianta.
The plane was on route from Queen Beatrix International Airport on the Carribean holiday resort of Aruba to Amsterdam when the fire broke out.
