The North's Minister for Finance, Mr Mark Durkan, has declared himself a candidate for leadership of the SDLP following the decision of Mr John Hume to resign.

Mr Durkan said he had the "insight, energy and experience" to lead the party.

His announcement yesterday came a day after the SDLP deputy leader, Mr Seamus Mallon, said he would not seek the leadership and had also decided to step down in November.

Last night, no other figure had indicated intending to contest the leadership; however, the deadline for declarations has been extended to tomorrow week.

Mr Durkan (41), a former aide to Mr Hume and Assembly member for Foyle, said the party needed to move forward.

The departure of Mr Hume and Mr Mallon was a "significant challenge" but Mr Durkan stressed the talent of others should not be underestimated.

The race for deputy SDLP leader intensified yesterday and at least four candidates could contest the post: Mr Alban Maginness, Mr Sean Farren, Mrs Brid Rodgers, and Mr Eddie McGrady.

Senator Edward Kennedy has paid tribute to Mr Hume. Mr Kennedy said he had known and admired Mr Hume for a quarter of a century. "John has always been an outstanding advocate for peace, justice, and reconciliation in Northern Ireland."
