The suggestion that the title of Lord Mayor should be abolished and that of Mayor substituted, is a reminder that the Lord Mayoralty of Dublin is of ancient lineage. Possibly it was the thought that the title was originally conferred in the reign of Charles II that disgusts the Councillor who would abolish it.
The first Lord Mayor, in 1666, was Sir Daniel Bellingham, whose portrait, by an unknown artist, is in the possession of the Corporation; a study of the long list of names of holders of the office will show that ancestors of many of the city's present-day prominent business and public men wore the famous Mayoral Chain.
The name of Sir Humphrey Jervis is commemorated in Jervis Street, that of Sir John Rogerson in the quay of that name, Sir Mark Rainsford was the owner of what is now Guinness's Brewery and has his name borne by a street behind the brewery front premises; the names of Sir William Fownes, Thomas Bolton, Philip Crampton, Sir Thomas Blackhall, Sir W. Stamer, and many another, may all be traced in the names of city streets.
