A NEW project which will provide 30 homes for homeless people moving on from emergency accommodation is due to open next month in Dublin’s south inner city.
The accommodation, built by the De Paul Trust, was due to open at the start of this year but has been delayed due to a shortage of Health Service Executive funding.
The HSE said yesterday it was committed to the development of new projects and that the opening of the James’s Street housing project illustrated that commitment. A total of €33 million in HSE funding has been made available this year to help provide homeless services such as helping those with mental health problems or drug and alcohol addictions.
However, this sum is the same as last year and homeless organisations say they are facing major financial difficulties.
The Homeless Network, a coalition of non-governmental organisations, says the funds shortages have delayed dozens of new projects.
