A sum of £4,000 seized during a drugs raid was ordered to be forfeited yesterday after a court heard it was the proceeds of heroin-trafficking.
The cash was found on Wayne Leahy (23), of Coultry Avenue, Ballymun, by members of the North City Drugs Unit who raided an apartment at Sean McDermott Street on December 19th, 1996.
During a police property application at Dublin District Court, Garda Cormac Brennan said the apartment at Gresham House was known to be a centre for heroin-dealing.
Leahy arrived at the apartment while it was being searched by gardai, and the money was found on him after he attempted to flee and resist arrest.
Garda Brennan said although no drug traces were found on the banknotes, he believed it was the proceeds of heroin-dealing and that Leahy was at the apartment to buy more drugs.
He said Leahy had two previous drug convictions, including a seven-year suspended prison sentence in the Circuit Court last July for having £10,000 worth of heroin and £15,000 worth of cocaine.
