Gardaí are seeking the driver of an oil tanker that overturned on the Monasterevin bypass this morning and caused massive traffic disruption.

Traffic intending to travel south on the N7 has been diverted through the Co Kildare town after the southbound carriageway was blocked by the crash, which happened shortly before 9.00 a.m.

Motorists have been warned to expect delays for most of the day.

The tanker driver left the scene, and it is understood he may have suffered head injuries in the crash.

He is described as being aged around 30, about five feet, ten inches tall and wearing dark clothing.
