A man who is believed to have slit the throat of a Greyhound bus driver causing it to crash and kill at least 10 people in Tennessee, is reported to be in custody.

It is believed he is a Croatian national.

The crash of the bus in Tennessee appears to have been a random event unrelated to last month's terror attacks on the US, the Transportation Department said.

All Greyhound bus services were suspended after a driver had his throat slit leading to a crash that killed at least 10 people.

The Transportation Department believes it was a random incident not related to the September 11 terrorist attacks, according to Mr Dave Longo, a spokesperson for the Federal Motorcarrier Administration, a division of the Transportation Department.

But he said there were conflicting reports and "we are waiting for more details to come in from the field."

The bus was in central Tennessee, en route from Nashville to Atlanta, when it crashed.

Passenger Ms Carly Rinearson told local TV that a man, who looked to be 30 to 35 years old, kept approaching her front seat in the bus and asking what time it was.

The man then asked if he could have her seat, Ms Rinearson said. She refused.

Afterward, "he just went up to the bus driver and, like, slit his throat and the driver turned the wheel and the bus tipped over," Ms Rinearson said.

The driver of the bus is reported to be in hospital. AP
