Gardai in Mallow, Co Cork, have interviewed the driver of a car who is alleged to have hit and killed a man and failed to stop early on Saturday, August 8th.

Mr Kieran O'Flynn (23) had attended a concert by the Wolfe Tones in Castletownroche, Co Cork, and was only 400 yards from his home at Lavally, on a slip road off the Killavullen Mallow Road, when he was struck by a blue car.

The Garda authorities in Mallow at first believed two cars had been involved in the incident, but they said they were most interested in interviewing the driver of the blue car.

Appeals were made to the public and anyone who travelled the road between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. that morning was asked to contact the gardai.

A senior officer in the investigation said the only clue they had to go on was that the car which struck the young man was blue.

Later that weekend the driver of the second car came forward and voluntarily gave a statement to the Garda.

It is understood that he came on the accident by chance after the driver of the first car had fled the scene.

Mr O'Flynn was pronounced dead on arrival at Mallow General Hospital. Forensic experts were called in and from accident debris they established the make of the car they sought.

It is expected that a file will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
