With his conquistador's beard and long wavy hair, Millar looks like a folksinging Don Quixote, bravely charging the citadels of pop with simple, unpretentious tunes such as Alcohol Problem, Every Soldier Knows and Dead Man's Hand.
Millar's sawdust-mill voice is perfectly suited to the seedy subject matter of his songs - he sounds like a male Marianne Faithful delving into the decadence which lurks deep inside the Celtic Tiger's lair.
Backed by guitarist Joe Chester, drummer Dave Hingerty, violinist Kristin Kelly and singer Miriam Ingram, Millar barks out his songs of loss and regret, peppering the pill with sharply-observed lyrics and moments of poignant reflection. The sense of ragged-trousered misanthropy is magnified by the sometimes shambolic delivery, but the warmth and wisdom shine through in songs such as The Deal, Happy Can Be and Saint Stephen.
Go and see the Doctor - he'll cure that irritating rash of inane Irish pop.
