The Bishop of Ferns, Dr Brendan Comiskey, is due to make his first public appearance for six days when he celebrates the Easter Vigil tonight at St Aidan's Cathedral in Enniscorthy.

Dr Comiskey has not commented since Wednesday of last week on the controversy surrounding his handling of complaints of sexual abuse against the late Father Sean Fortune.

He did not appear for yesterday's Passion of Our Lord service at the Cathedral. Local people said Dr Comiskey normally participated in the Good Friday ceremony, but there had been no formal indication from the bishop's press office that he would be taking part yesterday.

However, the bishop is listed as the celebrant for tonight's ceremony.
