A 19-year-old Letterkenny man, charged with a serious assault on a Buncrana teacher, was refused bail at a special sitting of the District Court yesterday.

Mr Jerome Bradley, Listillion, Letterkenny, Co Donegal, was charged with assault causing harm in Upper Main Street, Letterkenny, at the weekend.

Garda Seán Barrett told the court he arrested Mr Bradley after 6 p.m. at Letterkenny station on Monday and charged him at 7.05 p.m. that evening. Mr Bradley made no reply to the charge.

Insp Michael Finan objected to bail on the grounds that the injured party, assaulted in the early hours of Saturday morning, had received serious head injuries. He remains in a critical condition in Beaumont Hospital in Dublin.

Insp Finan said: "The defendant is on a serious charge and a more serious charge may follow."

An application for legal aid was granted.

Judge John O'Donnell remanded Mr Bradley in custody overnight and ordered him to appear before Letterkenny District Court today.

He said an application for bail could be renewed. He indicated that he would be seeking in the region of €5,000 cash or more to be lodged as bail, and that the defendant would have to surrender his passport to the court.

Judge O'Donnell indicated he would grant bail but added that he would reserve his decision until he received a detailed report of the injuries received by the victim.
