Kieran Donaghy and Henry Shefflin were tonight named as the GPA football and hurling players of the year at an awards ceremony in Citywest.

Donaghy, the catalyst for Kerry's All-Ireland winning run, was selected ahead of county teammate Darragh Ó Sé, Ciaran McDonald of Mayo and Armagh full-forward Ronan Clarke after his remarkable impact in his debut season.

Shefflin, who was confirmed as Kilkenny's new captain for the forthcoming season, previously won the award in 2002 and picks up a second GPA honour following another outstanding season leading the Kilkenny attack.
