New York - The Prime Minister of Dominica has pleaded with the UN Secretary-General, Mr Kofi Annan, to visit the Caribbean and see for himself that its banana-growers faced disaster because of a WTO trade finding.

In a speech to the General Assembly, Mr Edison James referred to a recent finding by the World Trade Organisation (WTO) calling for a change in the EU's banana import policies giving preference to the small farmers of mostly former British and French-ruled Caribbean territories. The case was brought by the US after US-based banana marketing companies complained of unfair competition.
