A jury at the Central Criminal Court has been told that DNA profiling has linked the accused with a young French woman who alleges he kidnapped and raped her in Limerick last year.
Dr Dorothy Ramsbottom of the Garda Forensic Science Laboratory said the chances of the profile matching anyone else in Ireland were one in 130,000.
Dr Ramsbottom told Mr Brendan Grehan SC, prosecuting, that for anyone else to have the same DNA profile, that person would have to be a close relative of the accused.
It was day four of the trial of a 33-year-old man who denies five charges of false imprisonment, rape, rape by penetration of the anus, aggravated sexual assault and assault causing harm between 7 p.m. on August 15th and 1 a.m. on August 16th, 2003.
Dr Ramsbottom told Mr Grehan that a second and the minor DNA profile she recovered from the woman's nail clippings also matched that of the accused. In this instance there was a one in 250 chance that anyone else in Ireland would have the same profile other than a close relative.
The hearing continues before Mr Justice Murphy.
