The Athletics Association of Ireland confirmed today they will suspend Cathal Lombard after the athlete tested positive for the banned substance EPO.

The AAI received a statement from the athlete where Lombard waived his right to have analysis carried out on the 'B' sample and therefore has accepted the suspension and foregone his right to a hearing.

Lombard can now expect a two-year suspension and is provisionally suspended with immediate effect.

Lombard's home club Leevale AC also issued a statement condemning the 5,000 and 10,000m runner's actions.

The club said "taking performance enhancing substances is at variance with the principles and ethos of the club" - whose motto is "Believe and you can achieve".

"The club have always promoted and will continue to promote athletics maintaining the highest degree of integrity, as we have since our foundation," the statement added.
