Gardai were yesterday investigating a report that a disabled English visitor to Cork was mugged by two thugs who threw him from his wheelchair and robbed him of around £1,500 in the city centre on Monday afternoon.

Mr Gary Lair, a former search and rescue leader who was paralysed in a cave rescue four years ago, told Cork's 96FM Radio that he was mugged by two men whom he approached for directions to a disabled toilet after arriving in Cork at around 5 p.m. on Monday. They tipped over his wheelchair in Maylor Street and made off with his bag and money.

Mr Lair yesterday thanked the people of Cork for donating over £1,500 after 96FM highlighted his plight.
