Gardaí in Monaghan are investigating an accident which claimed the life of a Derry truck driver yesterday evening.

It is believed that a man in his 60s was carrying out work on his 40ft truck when the accident occurred.

The accident happened at around 5.30 p.m. yesterday at Clontibret village, four miles from Monaghan town.

It is believed the man had pulled into the roadside, and had got out of the lorry to adjust a problem with the load of timber he was carrying.

It appears that while he was working underneath the truck it rolled over him.

The truck crossed the main road into the garden of a house. It missed the house by about 40 feet.

The man died at the scene, and his body was removed to Cavan General Hospital.

Fire units, members of the Garda and ambulances from Monaghan attended the scene.

Gardaí and garage mechanics were still working at removing the truck from the ditch late last night.
