A fire at a council yard in Derry has caused up to €1.5 million (£1 million) worth of damage, police said this morning.

A fire at a council yard in Derry has caused up to €1.5 million (£1 million) worth of damage, police said this morning.

Police are investigating the cause of the fire at the Pennyburn Industrial Estate early this morning.

When police arrived at the scene at 1.45am the council building and a number of tankers and road sweepers were on fire.

Seven fire appliances fought the blaze, the cause of which is not yet known. Arson has not been ruled out, a police spokeswoman said.
