A spokewoman confirmed that a suspicious package was discovered in the mail room at the Department and that "special procedures were followed".

She had no more details of the incident.

Gardaí say they have removed a package for examination.

Earlier, the Garda said that one person had been arrested and four others were questioned in relation of a wave of anthrax scares in Ireland.

"Files are being prepared for submission to the Director of Public Prosecutions, with a view to having those responsible brought before the courts in early course", the Garda said in a statement.

The statement said that those responsible for sending bogus anthrax material could face five years' imprisonment.

Earlier the Garda confirmed a man has been arrested in Kilkenny city in relation to anthrax scares and a woman was questioned in the city but later released.

It is not clear where the remaining three were questioned.

There were three anthrax scares earlier today, in Dundalk, Co Louth, Arklow, Co Wicklow and Mullingar, Co Westmeath.

Anthrax scares swept across Ireland yesterday and Wednesday.

A suspicious envelope was removed from Trinity College Dublin by the Army yesterday afternoon, while security services attended University College Dublin where a suspect envelope was also found.
