Dempsey pushing new work cycle

The Department of Transport is to provide bikes and the use of taxis in certain circumstance for its staff as part of a new workplace travel plan.

There is to be a lift-sharing website, and services such as bicycle training and "buddy" support.

The new arrangements for 435 workers in six Dublin offices will complement existing staff facilities such as subsidised public transport, a cycle mileage allowance, showers and changing rooms, flexible work sharing, e-working and term-time working.

Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey said he was keen his department should take a "leadership role" in the scheme, which, if successful, was likely to be extended to other civil service agencies in Dublin and private companies.

The new arrangements will initially apply to staff working at Kildare Street, Leeson Lane, Clare Street, Dawson Street, Frederick Buildings and the Irish Life Centre in order to promote sustainable transport.

The list of measures will include:

u Lift-sharing - the department will provide a dedicated website so staff can share lifts;

u Taxi support - taxis will be provided where those in lift-sharing have to go home in an emergency;

u New bikes - the department is to supply two new bikes per office for use on official business;

u Buddy services - those wishing to try commuting by bike can avail of a "buddy" to accompany them on the first commute;

u Travel subsidy - a mileage rate for those cycling on official business is to continue.
