US computer company Dell has laid off about 60 staff in Dublin and Limerick.

Fifty of the workers were based at the firm's sales and marketing centre in Cherrywood, south Dublin, while 10 others were let go from the company's manufacturing plant in Limerick.

Dell says there had been a "minor reorganisation" of their Irish operations, and that they hoped to find other jobs within the company for some of those affected.

Dell currently employs between 1,600 and 1,700 sales and marketing staff in Cherrywood, and about 3,000 at the Limerick manufacturing plant. Dell set up in Ireland in 1990, and is now one of the biggest employers in the country as well as the largest exporter.

In its last financial quarter, Dell made a profit of more than $1 billion on revenue of $13.4 billion. Kevin Rollins, the chief executive of Dell, said the firm should have revenue of between $14.1 and $14.5 billion in the current quarter.
