Good weather, GAA football matches and summer festivals all combined to produce lengthy traffic jams in several parts of the country yesterday evening.

A vintage tractor rally in Cooley caused long delays yesterday as people made their way to and from the event.

According to AA Roadwatch, motorists were experiencing delays of about one hour yesterday evening, as they travelled from Carlingford in the direction of Dundalk.

Earlier, the road between Belfast and Dundalk was exceptionally busy and delays were worst at the Ballymascanlan roundabout in Dundalk.

With Sligo, Galway, Kerry and Armagh all playing at Croke Park, traffic leaving Dublin was very heavy on the N2, N4, N6 and N7 from 6 p.m. onwards.

Traffic was also very slow along the coast roads in Dublin and Wicklow at that time with people returning from the beaches, having made the most of the sunny weather.

Motorists in Galway also experienced lengthy delays as the final day of the Galway races attracted a large crowd.

Yesterday signalled the end of the Spraoi festival in Waterford and traffic was heavy in the city.

The Mitchelstown Music Festival also led to slow-moving traffic.

AA Roadwatch has advised motorists to expect long delays to and from Dublin today due to two GAA matches and heavy bank holiday traffic.
