Jakarta - The death toll from floods and landslides started by torrential monsoon rains in south-east Asia has risen to at least 174, rescue workers in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand said yesterday.

In the worst-affected region, Indonesia's Sumatra island, the toll looked set to increase, with meteorologists predicting continuing downpours. But the situation in Malaysia and southern Thailand appeared to be improving as the rains eased.
