Mr Peter Tynan O Mahony, former Deputy Chief Sub-Editor with The Irish Times, died yesterday, aged 70.

Educated at St Mary's College, Rathmines, he joined the newspaper in 1965, where his father, Mr Gerard Cullen Tynan O Mahony, had worked. He is survived by his wife, Mary; daughter, Sioban; sons, Eoin and Julian; and brother, the comedian Dave Allen.

On resigning from The Irish Times with a disability pension, he devoted his editorial skills to producing the O Mahony Journal. The 12 volumes he edited demonstrate his talents as cartographer and photographer.

He was in Bantry, Co Cork, when the Betelgeuse tanker disaster occurred in 1979. His photographs were used as evidence at the subsequent inquiry.
