The death has occurred at the age of 95 of Ellen Higgins, the mother of Socialist party TD Joe Higgins.
Mrs Higgins of Ballineetig, Dingle, Co Kerry, known locally as Nell, died yesterday morning at West Kerry Community Hospital in Dingle.
She is survived by Mr Higgins, his brother Tom and sisters Mary, Nora, Terry and Helen. Mrs Higgins and her husband Denis reared their family on a medium-sized farm near Lispole in the Kerry Gaeltacht.
She was predeceased by her husband Denis and son Liam, the former Kerry footballer and selector and a well-known broadcaster with Raidió na Gaeltachta and Radio Kerry. Another son, Denis óg, and daughter Bríd are also dead.
