The Government should be planning the further development of LUAS and measures to make the lines more attractive to the public, according to the Dublin Chamber of Commerce (DCC).
Ms Gina Quin, chief executive of the DCC, said although LUAS would be of great help when the first stage opens later this year, it would not solve the problem of congestion in the city.
There is a need to ensure LUAS will attract people away from cars so that its benefits are maximised, Ms Quin said. "It must also integrate to the fullest possible extent with other public transport modes, particularly buses".
The DCC is also seeking an examination of options to ensure LUAS crossovers do not cause additional traffic congestion on the Red Cow roundabout, and high priority for bus lanes to ensure that the Quality Bus Corridor network is not frustrated by congestion at the roundabout.
Ms Quin has also called for a firm commitment from the Government that funding will be provided for the LUAS C1 extension to Dublin Docklands.
