London - Plans for minor criminals who repeatedly offend to be jailed for the weekend or given "9am to 5pm" daytime prison sentences were last night floated by the British Home Secretary, Mr Jack Straw.
In yet another "get tough" move, Mr Straw indicated he was now prepared to tear up the 1991 Criminal Justice Act of the former Conservative home secretary, Mr Douglas Hurd, which said that sentencing should be based on the "just deserts" principle that the punishment should fit the crime rather than the criminal's past record.
