Four people died on the roads over the weekend, bringing to 70 the number of people killed on the Republic's roads this year.
Gardaí in Navan are investigating a two-car collision at Proudstown at 1.45am yesterday in which a motorist died and another was injured. The victim was named yesterday as Paul Finnegan (30) of Lobinstown, Co Meath. The injured driver of the other vehicle was taken to Our Lady's Hospital in Navan.
In a collision at Ballmakill Beg, Castlemahon, Limerick, Brian Carroll (26), of Ballyagran, Co Limerick, was fatally injured when the car in which he was a rear-seat passenger collided with another vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Gardaí at Newcastlewest are investigating this crash in which the driver and another passenger in the same vehicle suffered minor injuries. They were treated at Limerick Regional Hospital.
At 3.30am on Saturday, a man died when the car in which he was a passenger crashed into a wall at Ulverton Road, Dalkey, Co Dublin. He was named as Daniel Kenny (20) of Beachside Drive, Riverchapel, Co Wexford. Witnesses are asked to contact Dalkey Garda station (tel: 01-6665451). A man believed to be the driver of the vehicle was yesterday being treated for his injuries in hospital.
A pedestrian, Cáit Bergin (76), from Coolpark, Ballacolla, Co Laois, died on Friday evening after being struck by a lorry at Main Street, Abbeyleix.
The 70 people who have died on the Republic's roads in 2006 include 33 drivers, 18 passengers and 16 pedestrians.
