German autos giant DaimlerChrysler AG said today it would shut three of its North American plants as part of the restructuring of its Freightliner US trucks unit.

The company also said it would cut 2,700 Freightliner jobs, including 1,100 salaried employees and 1,600 hourly employees.

DaimlerChrysler earlier said it would take a charge of $330 million for the plan which aims to return the unit to breakeven towards the end of 2002.

Freightliner is the latest headache for DaimlerChrysler, which is battling to return its US Chrysler unit to profit in 2002.
