A 35-year-old female cyclist was killed yesterday in a collision near the University of Limerick. A native of France, the woman was riding towards the college when she was involved in a collision with a truck.

It is understood the truck was turning into the construction site beside the Castletroy Park Hotel when the accident happened, just after 4pm.

The cyclist was taken by ambulance to St John's Hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later. The main road from the University of Limerick as far as the Groody roundabout was closed for several hours, resulting in major tailbacks.

Gardaí from Henry Street were last night examining the scene. A Garda spokesman said the dead woman's name would not be released until her family had been notified. She had been working and living in the Limerick area.

Witnesses are asked to call the gardaí at Henry Street on 061-212400.
