Officers from the Revenue Commissioners' Customs service have seized more than nine million cigarettes worth €2 million in Dublin port this week.
The 9,062,000 cigarettes were found in two 40-foot containers which arrived at the port from the port of Piraeus in Greece.
In the first container, 3,862,000 cigarettes were found concealed behind a consignment of drinking glasses. The second container yielded 5,200,000 cigarettes, found amongst a shipment of plastic food containers.
The cigarettes seized were Regal, Superking, Golden Beach, Sovereign and Raquel. A Revenue statement said the contraband were probably destined for the UK market, but represented a loss to the Exchequer of €2 million.
