A teenage boy has died following an assault in Claremorris, Co Mayo, in the early hours of Saturday morning. Gardaí have arrested another boy in connection with the incident.

The boy (17) died after an attack at a house at Claremount Manor, Knock road, at around 3am on Saturday.

He sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Office of the State Pathologist was notified and a preliminary postmortem is expected to take place later on Saturday.

The male juvenile arrested in connection with the incident is being held at Claremorris Garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

The scene is being preserved for a technical examination.
