Two gardaí were injured when their patrol car was involved in a head on collision with a car in Co Laois this afternoon.

The injured Gardaí, a man and woman who are both stationed at Portlaoise, are not believed to have sustained life threatening injuries.

They were taken to hospital along with one of the four occupants of the second car.

The collision occurred as gardaí were pursuing a car on the Mountrath Road outside Portlaoise at around 3pm.

A senior garda said the “car suspected of being involved in a number of burglaries in Cork rammed one of our patrol cars head on.”

All four occupants of the car were arrested and one was taken to hospital.

The remaining three are to be medically assessed at Portlaoise Garda Station.

The two gardaí are understood to be badly shaken following their ordeal. The condition of the individual from the other car remains unknown.

All of the injured are understood to initially have been brought to hospital in Portlaoise.

Gardaí in Portlaoise have notified the office of the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission(GSOC) who are expected to initiate an investigation.
