A man has been arrested in connection with the discovery of synthetic drugs worth an estimated €52,500 in Sligo yesterday.
The 25-year-old was found in possession of 1.5kg of Methylethcathinone, known as 4-Mec or “snow blow”, as a result of a joint intelligence operation between Revenue’s Customs Service and the Garda National Drugs Unit.
He was arrested at Holywell Road in Sligo yesterday evening.
The drug is a synthetic stimulant similar to the mephedrone, which was sold in headshops as “snow blow”, which was regarded as being similar to cocaine.
The drugs are believed to have originated in China, and were destined for Northern Ireland. It is the second seizure of this type of drug by Revenue this week.
The man is being detained at Sligo Garda station under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996.
The PSNI are now assisting in the investigation.
