Prisoner dies after stabbing in Cork prison

The 41-year-old was in the kitchen when he was attacked

A 41-year-old man has died following a stabbing in Cork prison on Saturday evening.

It is understood the man was in the kitchen of the prison after 5pm when a row erupted with another inmate over a TV remote control.

He suffered stab injuries to his chest and died at the scene. No one else was injured.

A spokesman for Irish Prison Service said a “serious incident” had taken place and gardaí were investigating.

The man’s details will not be publicly released until all his family have been informed.

Gardaí in Watercourse Road, who are investigating the death, said the man was pronounced dead by a local doctor and his body remains at the scene.

The office of the State Pathologist has been notified and the area the man was killed is being preserved for a technical examination.

This incident is the third death in an Irish jail this month.

On May 9th, an inmate was found dead in his cell at the Midlands Prison in Portlaise.

The day before, Douglas Ward was found dead in his cell at Mountjoy jail in Dublin.

He had been serving a 13 year sentence, with three years suspended, for the manslaughter of 18-year-old Niall Dorr in Dundalk in 2010.
