A pipe bomb found in the garden of a house on the northside of Cork city on Wednesday morning has been made safe by bomb disposal officers.
The device was found in the garden of a house at Killala Gardens in Knocknaheeny at around 8am by a woman in her 20s living in the house.
She contacted gardaí at Gurranebraher Garda station and officers confirmed that it was a pipe bomb and began evacuating the area.
The woman and her six-year-old daughter were evacuated as well as residents of five adjoining houses and residents of six other houses on the road.
Gardaí closed off the road and diverted traffic away from Killala Gardens which caused some delays in commuter traffic going and coming from the nearby Apple plant.
An army bomb disposal team from Collins Barracks was called and examined the device in situ before making it safe and removing it to Collins Barracks for disposal.
A Garda technical team is due to examine the device later on Wednesday for any forensic evidence which may help gardaí identify who was responsible.
Gardaí say they are keeping an open mind about the incident and appealed to anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity in the area to contact them.
Supt Con Cadogan said they were particularly anxious to hear from anyone who may have seen suspicious activity in the area between 11pm on Tuesday night and 8am on Wednesday.
