Petrol bombs thrown at police in republican part of Lurgan

A number of petrol bombs were thrown at police as trouble flared in a republican area in Co Armagh early on Easter Monday.

A van was hijacked and set alight at the Lake Street railway junction in Lurgan, Co Armagh.

The vehicle was taken in the nationalist Kilwilkie estate at about 4.30am.

Three petrol bombs were thrown at officers who attended the incident. There were no injuries.

Members of the Apprentice Boys of Derry Protestant loyal order marched through parts of Lurgan later on Easter Monday.

The hijacking prompted the closure of the railway line, affecting the cross-Border Enterprise service. The line reopened before 10am.

On Saturday, masked men had marched through Kilwilkie, a staunchly republican neighbourhood, to mark the centenary of the Easter Rising.

Police are investigating, as the parade was staged without the necessary permissions.
