Gardaí suspect a cyclist who died after being found in an unresponsive state by a roadside in Co Kerry had a medical condition that resulted in his death. It is understood no signs of third party involvement, including any crash with another road user, has been uncovered to date in the investigation.

However, the man’s death is still being officially treated as unexplained and gardaí in Tralee who are carrying out the investigation into the fatality are continuing to appeal for witnesses and information.

The dead man, who was in his 50s, was found in an unresponsive state just after 10.30am on Tuesday on the roadside at Ardywanig, Milltown, near Castlemaine.

The alarm was raised, with gardaí and paramedics rushing to the scene. However, while efforts were made to revive the man, he was pronounced dead at the since.

His remains were taken to the University Hospital Kerry mortuary and a postmortem performed. While the results of that examination have not been released for operational reasons, it has confirmed the man had a medical condition that may be linked to his death while cycling.

However, gardaí are appealing for any witnesses who were in the area around the time to come forward. Road users who have camera or dash-cam footage of local roads around Ardywanig, between 10am and 10.40am on Tuesday, have been asked to provide it to gardaí.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Tralee Garda station on 066-7102300, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666111 or any Garda station.
