McGeever released on bail in ‘kidnap’ case

Property developer is charged with wasting Garda time over claims of abduction

Property developer Kevin McGeever has been released on bail and will appear in court again next month on charges of wasting Garda time.

The 68-year-old, with an address at Nirvana, Ballywinna, Craughwell, Co Galway appeared at Harristown District Court today after he had the terms of his bail amended by the High Court yesterday.

The terms include he reside at an address at Brooklawn, Clontarf Dublin 3, sign on three times a week with gardaí, surrender his travel documents, and put up his own bond of €10,000.

Mr McGeever had been held in custody at Castlerea Prison for the past two and a half weeks after failing to come up with the bail money which was set when he made an initial court appearance at Strokestown District Court on July 24th.

He faces two charges under Section 12A and 12B of the 1976 Criminal Law Act, regarding the wasting of Garda time between January 29th and February 28th this year.

The charges follow a garda investigation which was launched in January after Mr McGeever was found on a roadside in Co Leitrim.

He had been reported missing in May 2012 and was not seen until January this year when he was found by a passerby.

Judge Conal Gibbons was told at Harristown District Court, which is located beside Castlerea Prison in Co Roscommon, that Mr McGeever had taken up bail in the High Court.

He remanded Mr McGeever on continuing bail to appear at Loughrea District Court on September 4th.
