A 58-year-old man, who died after being assaulted in Kildare on Saturday night, has been named locally as Patsy Kelly.
The attack happened at Sarto Park, a residential area in Naas.
Gardaí are investigating if Mr Kelly, nicknamed "Bud", and well known in the town, was attacked by someone who had been with him on Saturday night.
A 35-year-old man was arrested at the scene and is being detained at Naas Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 as amended. He can be questioned for up to 24 hours before being charged or released.
Mr Kelly was rushed to Naas General Hospital after the attack, where he later died from his injuries.
State pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy was notified and is to carry out a post mortem. The scene of the assault was preserved for examination by the Garda Technical Bureau.
Gardaí in Naas have also carried out door to door questioning in the Sarto Park area and have appealed for witnesses or anyone who may have information to contact them in Naas Garda Station on 045 - 884300, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
A social media page to pay tribute to “one of the town’s best known characters” has been set up by locals in Naas following the death. Hundreds of people have posted their condolences and memories of Mr Kelly on the page.
