Man remanded over death in Cork city

Dubliner and father-of-two was found collapsed on city quay and died in hospital

A man in his 20 has been remanded in custody after he was charged with the manslaughter of a father of two who died after being assaulted in Cork city centre last year.

Ciaran Moran (28) with an address at Judge Darley's Hostel, Benburgh Street, Dublin 7 was charged with the manslaughter of Keith Flanagan at St Patrick's Quay, Cork on October 3rd.

Mr Flanagan (36), who was originally from Luttrell Park in Carpenterstown, Dublin, was found in a collapsed state at St Patrick’s Quay in Cork city at about 11pm on October 3rd.

He was rushed to Cork University Hospital by ambulance where he underwent emergency surgery for a brain injury but he died two days later.

At Cork District Court, Det Garda Malcolm Walsh gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution in relation to Mr Moran and told the court that Mr Moran made no reply to the charge after caution.

Insp Mary King said gardaí were seeking a remand in custody and defence solicitor, Ronald Lynam said he was not making a bail application and had no objection to the Garda application.

Judge Con O’Leary granted the garda application and remanded Mr Moran in custody to appear again on Sept 18th by video link from Cloverhill Prison in Dublin.

Dressed in a T-shirt and grey tracksuits pants, Mr Moran, who is originally from Shankill in Co Dublin, did not speak during the brief hearing at the Anglesea Street Courthouse in Cork.
