A man in his 80s was found dead at the scene of a crash in Co Monaghan on Wednesday, gardaí have said.

The man's body was discovered by gardaí near the scene of a crashed Opel Corsa car at Carnaveigh, Castleblayney at 4pm on Wednesday.

His remains were taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda where a post-mortem examination is due to take place. The driver of the Opel Corsa, a woman in her 20s, was uninjured.

The road was closed for a period of time yesterday to facilitate a forensic examination.
