Two unarmed gardaí managed to disarm and arrest a gunman who was seen firing shots in west Dublin on Thursday night.

Gardaí at Ballyfermot Garda station were responding to reports of a man brandishing a weapon and firing shots in the Kylemore Park area.

The individual was intercepted by officers at the busy Ballyfermot Parade shopping district, 1km away, at 11pm.

A violent struggle ensued before the man was disarmed and taken into custody.

A firearm was seized, along with ammunition and a knife.

The 47-year-old perpetrator is being detained at Ballyfermot station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939, and investigations are ongoing.
