Man faces court over shooting by gunman on bicycle

A 22-year-old man has appeared before a special court sitting in Co Limerick charged in connection with a weekend shooting where a man was targeted in broad daylight by a gunman on a bicycle.

The victim, who is 42 years old, suffered gunshot wounds to his hands and legs in the shooting, which took place at Hyde Road in Limerick city at 2pm on Saturday, May 9th.

Jason Freyne, of no fixed abode, but originally from Limerick, appeared before a special sitting of Kilmallock District Court on Monday afternoon.

He is also charged with possession of one cartridge of ammunition with intent to endanger life on the same date.

Solicitor Darach McCarthy told the court his client was in receipt of State assistance and asked that he be assigned on free legal aid.

Sgt Padraig Sutton said he was seeking for the accused to be remanded in custody.

He said Mr Freyne had no address and was of no fixed abode and asked for this to be amended in the charged sheet.

Mr McCarthy said he would make “no comment” on the request but told the court he would be making a bail application at the next court appearance.

Sgt Sutton asked that the accused be remanded in custody until Thursday, May 14th, and indicated the State would be objecting to bail on that date.

Judge Marian O’Leary was told a file is being prepared for the DPP’s office but no directions are available yet.

Judge O’Leary remanded the accused in court until Thursday when he is due to appear before Limerick District Court for a contested bail application.
