Man dies after hijacked taxi crashes into Dublin bridge

A man in his 20s has died after a hijacked taxi crashed into a lock bridge in Dublin city centre early this morning.

The car was taken from its owner before the crash at North Wall Quay at about 2.40am.

There were three men in the car when it crashed.

A second man in his early 20s received serious injuries and was taken to the Mater Hospital for treatment. A third male received minor injuries.

North Wall Quay was closed in both directions at the Convention Centre for examination by Garda forensic collision investigators. The road has now reopened.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses or anyone who was on North Wall Quay at the time to contact Store Street Garda station on 01-6668000.

The man who died was the fourth young man to be killed in a road crash this Bank Holiday weekend.

A 22-year-old died yesterday morning when the car he was driving crashed into a wall on the Duleek to Julianstown road in Co Meath. He was the only occupant of the car.

On Saturday, two young men died in a crash as they were returning from a festival at the seaside village of Rathmullan, Co Donegal.

The crash happened on the Rathmullan to Portsalon Road at about 3am.

The victims - Sean Graham (19) and Matthew Crawford (21) both from Letterkenny - were buried today.
